Early French Musical Automaton Troubador, c. 1870
Possibly by Fournier, with fine bisque head, portrait-
like expression, closed smiling mouth, fixed pale-blue
glass eyes outlined in darker blue, feathered brows,
pierced ears, original hand-tied blonde mohair wig and
metal hands holding guitar, on rosewood-veneered base
containing single-air going-barrel movement that cau-
ses the troubadour to nod his head and strum in time to
the music, dressed in original well-preserved olive and
cream satin Renaissance-style costume trimmed with
metal-thread, lace and (fragile) silk ribbon rosettes,
height 13 ¾ in. (35 cm). This piece was designed as the
companion to an automaton of a female harpist with
matching smiling bisque head and rosewood base. Both
may be the work of little-known maker Jules Joseph
Fournier of the Passage du Bois de Boulogne, Paris,
whose label has been found on a similar (but later)
harpist automaton. A fine early automaton in fresh
original working condition.
