Musical Clown Magician Automaton by Vichy, c. 1900
With plaster-composition head and original paint, mod-
elled as a smiling boy with pale complexion and deli-
cate shading on cheeks, chin and nose, open mouth with
painted teeth, brown glass eyes with articulated eyelids,
original theatrical yellow mohair wig and felt hat,
perched on the edge of felt-covered stool, holding a
metal top hat and a handkerchief, single-air going-
barrel movement in the base with brass Vichy key and
"acorn" stop/start, dressed in the original patterned silk
suit, striped stockings and checked olive tailcoat
trimmed with sequins, height 21 in. (54 cm). – The ma-
gician turns his head, nods and flutters his eyelids at the
audience while waving his handkerchief over the top
hat, in which sits a white mouse. He lays the handker-
chief over the hat, crosses his left leg over his right, and
then lifts the handkerchief with a flourish to reveal that
the mouse has been replaced by a yellow-eyed cat stick-
ing out its tongue! – Literature: Bailly, "Automata, the
Golden Age", pp. 96, 248. – A scarce and charming
magician automaton, in beautiful original condition.
