With Jumeau bisque portrait head impressed "10", stamped in red "Déposé Tête Jumeau, Bte. S.G.D.G. 10" and signed with artist's marks "H4", closed smiling mouth with accentuated cupid's bow, deeply molded philtrum, wide-set fixed blue paperweight eyes with dark outline and molded eyelids, applied pierced ears, brown hair wig, bisque shoulder plate and hands, standing behind magician's tripod table with appliquéd velvet cloth, two upturned flowerpots and a die, two-air goingbarrel movement contained in figure's torso, in décolleté eau-de-nil satin costume with metallic decoration, burgundy bodice, silk brocade overskirt and headdress with a pair of horns, height 30 in. (76 cm) including headdress, (newer papier-mâché torso; associated bisque hands; chips on both earring holes; small scratches on eyes, tiny rubs that do not detract from the face; rub on child's nose). – The automaton performs thirteen movements. The lady magician looks from side to side and waves her wand with two movements of her right hand. She bows her head to the left, right and centre as the pots open alternately to reveal three 'apparitions': a chattering monkey, a girl blowing kisses and a clown sticking out his tongue. – The bisque portrait head was one of a special series produced by Jumeau. With her patrician features and mechanical complexity, the "Magicienne" represented one of the most luxurious items in the Roullet et Decamps catalogue at 180 Francs. This example was dressed by the Decamps-Bellancourt family in antique materials of the original style.
