Depicting an eccentric gentleman with composition character head, original paint (light retouch on tip of nose), fixed brown glass eyes, mohair wig, bisque hands holding pince-nez and cane, articulated neck, arms and telescopic legs, dressed for Summer weather in pinstriped silk trousers, rose satin jacket, waistcoat and trilby hat, on painted wood and card base modelled as a pavement, the going-barrel mechanism with Renou key and start/stop driving two pulleys and a single-air cylinder movement, 17 in. (43 cm) high retracted, 20 in. (51 cm) high extended. – One of a series of "metamorphic" automata by Louis Renou, whose work often incorporated a surprising element in scenes of everyday life. Here a mercurial individual raps his cane impatiently while consulting a street thermometer through his pince-nez. As the temperature rises, so does the man, until he is as tall as the thermometer itself. When the temperature reaches 100 degrees, he lowers the pincenez, his neck extends from his collar and he tilts his head back in amazement. The temperature drops abruptly back to 25 degrees and the gentleman, too, returns to his original height. – A rare and humorous automaton, in working order!
