Rare Three-Per-Turn

Probably by Lecoultre, playing 24 airs on three revolutions of "fat" cylinder, with 143 teeth in comb (complete), massive key-wind single-spring motor with additional folding steel winding lever, brass bedplate, instant-stop control, rosewood-veneered case with red interior, hinged endflap, carrying handles and geometric boxwood inlay on front and lid, width 29 in. (74 cm), cylinder 19 ½ x 5 ¼ in. diameter (50 x 13,5 cm). Accompanying the musical box are two tune-sheets (similar illustrated in H.A.V. Bulleid, "Musical Box Tune Sheets", p. 72) numbered "M.A. 1904" and "A.E.V. 1904". Good restored playing condition, a couple of minor damper squeaks. – Ord-Hume notes that both Bremond and Lecoultre produced three-tunes-per-turn musical boxes between 1850 and 1860. Tunes on this example are pinned to play for around 30 seconds each. Though briefer than on traditional two-per-turn musical boxes, the music is lively and ambitiously arranged. The program, predominantly operatic, includes works by Bellini, Persiani and Donizetti, usually with three airs by each composer featured on a single revolution. – A musical box of rare format and impressive proportions.
