"Hungarian Dancer" Automaton Working Model from Atracciones Apol

Depicting a gypsy in a shadowy forest clearing. With fine Jumeau bisque portrait head (with artist mark "H3") modelled as an adult woman with classical profile, closed mouth with pronounced cupid's bow, defined philtrum, aquiline nose, fixed blue paperweight eyes and applied pierced ears, bisque hands, papier-mâché body and original non-operative going-barrel clockwork motor. - Beside the gypsy sits a fur-covered drinking bear with articulated head, right arm and mouth. The figures are driven by an electric motor housed in marbled wood cabinet with glazed upper section and paneled base, gypsy approx. 26 ½ in. (67 cm), cabinet: approx. ht. 77 ½ x wd. 37 ½ x dp. 25 in. (197 x 94 x 63,5 cm), wig not removed, minor flake on left ear-piercing hole. - While the bear lifts his glass and tips back his head to drink, the gypsy turns and inclines her head, raises the tambourine and twists her right hand. The exceptional bisque portrait head by Jumeau is seen on a small number of Roullet et Decamps automata produced during the 1880s. Other automata with the same head mould include the 'Magicienne', 'Pifferari' and Vichy's 'Violin Concerto'. A rare and visually impressive automaton with a particularly beautiful expression. - Provenance: Former collection of Atracciones Apolo, an indoor amusement park opened by Josep Vallés Rovira on Parallel Avenue, Barcelona, in 1935. One of the park's most famous attractions was the Museo las Maravillosas Figuras en sus Dioramas (Museum of Marvellous Figures in their Dioramas), a collection of 19th century French automata in fantasy settings designed and painted by the artist Martí Llauradó. - According to an article published by Edición del Domingo on 19 August 1990, the Apolo's automata museum closed in 1957.
