Stacked Cylinder Musical Box by Harmonie, c. 1968

Klingenthal, Saxony. Playing one air ("Rosenstock hold erblüht"), with 30 teeth in comb (complete) and cylinder with 30 single/double milled sections, in oak case with carved design of animals on the lid, wd. 9 in. (23 cm), cylinder approx. 1 ¼ in. With a workforce of 50, the firm designed, manufactured and assembled its movements entirely in-house, with production of the governor-train only outsourced to a factory in Glashütte. Marxsen notes that production reached 30,000 units per year and boasted a repertoire of forty tunes arranged by the skilled employee Herbert Gerbeth. - Technically fascinating and a valuable document of the post-war mechanical music industry in eastern Germany.
