Geneva, No. 427, with 8-day timepiece, alarm movement, 2-inch (5 cm) Arabic dial with subsidiary alarm dial supported by columns with faceted capitals, on rectangular base of cobalt-blue starburst guilloché enamel, the top decorated with bunches of roses flanking enameled lid with stylized scene of Isle Rousseau, with going-barrel movement, automaton singing bird with moving beak, perch, wings and tail, the underside stamped with hallmarks and "427, Déposé, 935, Swiss Made", ht. 5 ½ in. (14,5 cm) x 4 1/8 in. (10,5 cm), restoration on front left corner, surface scratches, working order, bird somewhat fast, alarm function untested. - The singing bird can be activated independently or by the alarm mechanism. At the desired time, the bell rings, the lid opens, the bird rises, turns from side to side, sings, flaps its wings and flutters its tail before descending into the box as the lid closes once more. - Marguerat's singing bird alarm clock combines mechanical ingenuity with fine enamel work and a striking Art-Deco design - a superb exhibition piece. - Literature: Geoffrey T.
