Presumably Germany. Modeled as an auctioneer at wood podium, with papier-mâché head, articulated lower lip, side-glancing eyes and eyebrows, dressed in brown velvet jacket and top hat, the podium concealing 230-volt English electric motor with four cams causing the figure to gesticulate with his left hand, nod his head, look rakishly from side to side and move his lower lip as though speaking as he raises his eyebrows in mock surprise, ht. 37 in. (94 cm), face and hands repainted, with later speed control, working but electrical functions not guaranteed. - Provenance: "Prop Art: The Ken Paul Collection", Sotheby's London, 13 March 2002, Lot 1087. - A prop from the Academy Award-nominated film "Sleuth", a two-handed mystery thriller, starring Michael Caine and Sir Laurence Olivier. It was the final film directed by Joseph L. Manciewicz, with a music score by John Addison and set by Ken Adam, whose other work included Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove" and the futuristic scenery in Bond films "Dr. No" and "Gold Finger". - Though the cast of "Sleuth" consisted of just two actors, the various toys, games and automata played their own very special role in the film. The piece offered here appears in the scene where Caine and Olivier hunt for costumes in the cellar of Cloak Manor.
