Broadcast Interview Table, c. 1952

No. 39, fine beech and pear table, 60 ½ x 29 ½ x 55 in., designed and manufactured for the radio studio on Wallrafplatz in Cologne. With space for several people, microphones and newspapers. Command console in the center of the table for communication via broadcasting technology and direction, as well a series of cut-outs designed to improve the tone and subdue resonance. Lights and switches are present as originals. Provenance: one of the radio studios of NWDR/WDR. – History: The original radio station of Cologne, destroyed during WWII, was replaced at the instigation of director Hans Hartmann with the radio studio at 5 Wallrafplatz and inaugurated in 1952. The planning architect and builder, Peter Friedrich Schneider, created a gem of 50's architecture with the design for its interior. From the two broadcasting halls, the lively staircases and adjoining rooms, to the ceiling lamps, the studio displays some of the finest style elements of the post-war period. – Devices combining a mixture of technical functions, such as the interview tables in the individual radio studios, were designed in the same style by the architecture collective. In 1994, thanks to its interior architecture, the radio studio was listed. – The studio tables were produced in various sizes and formats, though all with gently rounded corners instead of hard angles. The comparatively small size of the piece offered here points to its original placement in the news and information segment, while the early inventory number shows that it formed part of the first outfitting of the building. The design lends itself well to both a classical and a modern setting, such as a generously furnished loft apartment. – Image 1: WDR editor at a circular table with his guests.
