Austrian Musical Picture Clock Depicting the Surrender at Világo

Oil on metal (not black-lighted), enameled Roman dial, Ø 4 ½ in. (11,5 cm), three-train movement striking hours and quarters on two gongs, silk-thread suspension, pull-string repetition, gilt-wood and gesso frame with dial in arch, the independent two-air cylinder movement stamped "A. Olbrich in Wien" with pull-string release and 83 teeth in comb (complete), image 18 x 23 ½ in. (46 x 60 cm), wd. 32 x ht. 34 in. (81 x 86 cm) in frame, cylinder 4 in. (10 cm), with pendulum, no keys. – Overall good, clock movement running, accuracy not guaranteed, one striking hammer loose, some retouch in dial, frame suitably refinished, cylinder movement in good playing condition, albeit with minor damper noise. – The unusual historical scene depicts "The Surrender at Világos" on 13 August 1849, the decisive final point in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848/49. The scene shows the Hungarian troops gathered on the outskirts of the village after their defeat by Austrian and Russian forces. The musical arrangements are uncommonly complex for a movement of this type. The replaced backboard and an additional winding hole in the size of the frame suggest the former presence of another or an additional musical movement. – A fine presentation piece!
