Heinz Waaske and his Cameras ÿ a Collection by Ulrich Vogt

The later Rollei designer Heinz Waaske (1924ÿ1995) played a crucial role in shaping the German camera industry. It all began at Wirgin in Wiesbaden with the first Edixa SLR cameras and the small Edixa 16, the precursor to the later global success, the Rollei 35, which was manufactured for seven years at the Rollei factory in Braunschweig and in Singapore, after Wirgin rejected the new design in 1964. His pleas to focus more on electronics fell on deaf ears at Rollei. He then went on to design cameras for Voigtl?nder, Minox, Robot, and Zeiss. In 1995, the two photography historians J?rg Eikmann and Ulrich Vogt contacted the designer with the aim of writing a book about his life's work.
