4 Beautiful, Dignified Photographs in Burlwood Frames

Burlwood frames measuring 25 x 29 to 21 x 25 cm. Two of the portraits depict the same lady a few years apart. The pictures are from England c. 1850ÿ60; they were framed with their protective glass under an additional glass about 20ÿ30 years later. What's special about three of the ambrotypes is that at first glance they look like pannotypes. Because one of the glasses was fogged up too much on the inside and had to be cleaned, it's only upon opening that one sees that underneath the ambrotype is a black corduroy-like velvet, which creates this impression. The velvet has been bleached in the transparent areas over decades of hanging, thus creating a negative that brightens the shadows, similar to a contrast mask. In other words, an autocatalytically developed photograph on fabric in addition to the ambrotype. A very special piece for a sophisticated exhibition, especially for collections focusing on the aspect of illusion in photography.
