Depicting a canine school master instructing his feline students in ‘La Chasse aux Souris’, all three with sculpted heads and paws and glass eyes, the master with solemn
expression and articulated jaw, the tabby students reminiscent of Louis Wain illustrations, one crying, the other shyly smiling, on fabric-covered base with two-air going-barrel movement activated by moving a leather satchel that stands in front of the blackboard, ht. 27 in. (68 cm). including board, with painted maker's escutcheon. The master nods at his student, turns his head and opens his mouth as though reading from the exercise book which he raises in his right paw, while lifting his left paw to scold the 'boy' who raises both paws to his eyes, stamps his left foot and trembles. The 'girl' meanwhile lifts her exercise book and turns her head to read. A fabulous contemporary automaton
with beautiful characterization and an amusing narrative, in fine working order!
