"SOL-20" by Processor Technology, 1976

The "SOL" was developed by Bob Marsh, Lee Felsenstein and Gordon French. Bob founded his company, Processor Technology, in April 1975 to manufacture 4K RAM memory boards for the MITS "Altair". In June 1975, Bob and Les Solomon (technical editor of "Popular Electronics" magazine) designed the "SOL-20" computer. Bob used as the side panels sections of walnut, which he had originally planned to use for a digital clock. – A major difference between the "SOL-20" and most other computers of this era was its built-in video drive, allowing it to be attached to a composite monitor for display. – Based on the "Intel 8080" microprocessor, this machine holds a special place in computer history for technical as well as aesthetic reasons. It is one of the earliest machines with a keyboard interface, and was a precursor of modern video output boards, owing to its ability to display alphanumeric characters on the screen. The idea was later taken up by the "Apple II" and brought to fruition. – The machine in this lot is complete, and boots up although more detailed tests were not carried out. Slight rust marks, otherwise good overall condition.
