With two 4-air cylinders and one spirally-pinned single-air cylinder, nickel-plated double-spring movement, fine comb of 160 teeth, complete, zither, speed-control, tune-indicator, manual tune-change and control for pushing cylinder away from the comb, in quarter-veneered rosewood case with kingwood borders, paneled lid and cylinder-storage drawer, width 32 ¾ in. (83 cm), cylinders 14 in. (35,5 cm). The so-called "Semi-Helicoidal" style of musical box allows the performance of a long piece of music on a cylinder pinned for continuous play. Ord-Hume writes that the helicoidal movement was purportedly devised by François Conchon in 1878 and produced under the model name Étoile. Later patents for helicoidal movements were also granted to Arthur Junod of Ste-Croix. See Ord-Hume, "The Musical Box" (1995), pp. 95–96 for a discussion of this type. – A particularly rare and complex musical box!
