Oil on canvas of a street with a procession of dignitaries, flag-bearers and litters, a British officer in front of governmental buildings, wigged figures observing from the first-floor windows and 1 ¾-inch enameled Roman dial in the pediment above, with two-train clock movement No. 84892, two striking mechanisms Nos. GG 13 and GG 17 and a cylinder musical movement, No. 63137, playing eight operatic airs, in burr-elm-veneered frame, cylinder 8 ¼ in. (21 cm), overall 29 x 38 in. (74 x 97 cm), image with usual craquelure and retouch, striking mechanisms in need of regulation, otherwise good working condition. With three keys. – The painting probably represents a meeting between members of the ruling Quing dynasty and British officials, perhaps upon the conclusion of the Second Opium War (1856–1860). – The clock strikes the hours on a gong accompanied by the first striking mechanism on the hours and the halves. The second striking mechanism, activated at 12:00 o'clock, chimes on two gongs. The cylinder musical movement plays at 6:00 o'clock. A complex and unusual arrangement.
