Magnetic Manivelle Automaton with Erzgebirge Figures, c. 1890

The Magnetic Toy, possibly by Zimmer & Söhne, Shalkau, Thuringia. Village scene with lithographed paper-covered houses, trees with feather foliage, hand-turned musical movement and painted metal plate with moving magnet beneath, base 8 ¼ x 8 ½ in. (21 x 22 cm). – With twenty carved and painted wood figures, including horses, a pulling buggy, chariot and a sled, trumpeters, chimney sweep, clown, dancer on a horse, soldier and pedestrians, in 3 original card boxes with instruction labels in German, French and English: "Place one of the objects at the place of the iron-plate. Turn slowly the handle and the figure will follow the direction of the magnet. Having finished the game, place again the iron-plate over the magnet. The way as well as the iron-plates of the figures should always be kept free of dust etc." – Good original condition, bright colors, figures with minor losses, musical movement functions well, magnetic function inactive.
