Paris, depicting a piano duet and an audience of three seated ladies, one visibly bored, the figures with wax shoulderheads, painted features, dressed mohair wigs, sculpted kid-covered bodies and original lace-trimmed satin costumes (one seated lady probably redressed), mounted on inset velvet-covered stands in salon setting with two simulated windows, alcove, marbled dado, carved ceiling with plaster cornice and neo-classical painting in central roundel, fireplace and illuminated chandelier with milk-glass shades, standing figures approx. 13 in. (33 cm), room: ht. 27 ½ x wd. 32 x dp. 20 in. (70 x 81 x 51 cm) excluding frame. Overall good, pianist missing one arm, some wear in fabric. – Litera-ture: Coleman, "Collectors Encyclopedia of Dolls", Volume II, pp. 686–687. – According to Coleman's research, the sisters Mmes. Lafitte and Désirat created a series of dolls to illustrate each season's fashion, with wax heads supplied by the Musée de Grevin. Madame Lafitte was the sister-in-law of the founder of the fash-ion periodical "Femina" and the dolls were widely ac-claimed and exhibited.
