Triberg, after Jacob Frisard, Model 7, with going-barrel movement, bird with original iridescent forest-green, blue and gold plumage, articulated red-tipped wings, metal beak, tail and swiveling perch, in engine-turned silver case with hidden key-compartment, geometric teal guilloche panels on front and sides, with fine still life studies of a delftware bowl, parakeet and peaches (top), a lobster, goblet and flowers (front) and peeled fruit, insect and snail (back), the oval lid depicting a boy feeding chicks, wd. 3 ¾ x dp. 2 ¼ x ht. 1 ½ in. (9,5 x 6 x 4 cm), with key, good working condition. In leather-covered traveling case marked "Lancel, 38 Blvd. des Italiens, Paris". - While the detailed motifs on top and lower case recall 17th century Dutch still life paintings and imagery of opulence and vanitas, the portrait of the boy feeding chicks pays homage to the renowned automatist Jacob Frisard (1753-1812). Mayson illustrates the original of this portrait on a Frisard singing bird box documented by Matthias Grisbaum in 1922. The date suggests that the model offered here was amongst the earliest commercial singing bird boxes produced at the Griesbaum factory. - Literature: Geoffrey T. Mayson, "Mechanical Singing Bird Tabatières", p. 106. - An exhibition-quality singing bird box.
