Geneva, no. 272, with fusee movement stamped "Bruguier, Génève", four pairs of cams operating in sequence 1-2-3-2-3-4, male winding square, bird with rich iridescent green, red and blue plumage, articulated bone beak, head, perch, wings and tail, filigree grille with engraved foliate scrolls and flowers, tortoiseshell case with hinged key-compartment, oval lid with internal miniature "trompe l'oeil" study of lake scene framed by flowers on a cornflower-blue ground, the lid exterior depicting a rose and polyanthus floral cluster on ground of changeable guilloche enamel, underside of mechanism engraved in script "Charles Bruguier, rue des Paquis no. 5 à Geneve, Suisse" and former owner's inscription "F.I. Wilden, Landmann Str., Cologne, & 7. W. 45 St., New York", wd. 3 ¾ x dp. 2 1/3 x ht. 1 ¼ in. (9,5 x 5,8 x 3,3 cm), good working and singing condition. - A superb early singing bird box automaton with exquisite enamel decoration and rare engraved signature.
