Playing two airs, with sectional comb in eighteen groups of three teeth (complete), bass teeth on the right, spring dated 1819 (not inspected), burr-wood case with reverse-painted hunting scene on glass lid, figured tortoiseshell borders and lining, wd. 3 ½ (9 cm), cylinder 2 1/8 in. (5,5 cm), inconspicuous corner splinter and usual minor irregularities in painted surface, movement in excellent restored playing condition. - John Sandy of Alyth, Perthshire, is credited with the invention of the "hidden hinge" on snuff boxes. Since Sandy had been bedridden following an accident in his youth, Charles Stiven of Laurencekirk took over the manufacture and marketing of his design.
