Receiver for Baudot Multiplex Type-Printing Telegraph System, c.

Baudot or Multiplex system telegraph receiver, built by Jules Carpentier in France, serial no. 864-C-25-SI, accompanied by an 1893 engraving representing the Baudot machine at the Telegraph Office in Milan. The Multiplex telegraph, invented in France by Emile Baudot in 1874, used the first 5-bit digital code, which evolved into modern ASCII. The system enabled multiple operators to transmit together on the same line. The text was first typed on a special keyboard and then digitally encoded by punching the code onto tape. It was then transmitted as binary electrical impulses and decoded by the receiver into plain text on a strip of paper to be glued onto the telegram module. The Multiplex telegraph was the prototype of the tele-printer. The example offered here is in excellent cosmetic and apparently equally good mechanical condition. As the unit was originally used for exhibition purposes, it is, however, essentially untested. The low serial number suggests an early production date. - Jules Carpentier, a member of the Académie des Sciences, built the Baudot telegraph equipment for France and Italy after taking over Ruhmkorff’s atelier in Paris.
