Telegraphone Magnetic Wire-Recording and Repeating Device, c. 19

No. 128, for magnetic sound recording of tones (e.g. telephone conversations) and their subsequent playback. – Electric drive (110 V), with recording and playback head, oak case, very good original condition! – Note: The forerunner of the tape recorder was the magnetic Telegraphone, invented in 1898 by the telecommunications engineer Valdemar Poulsen in Denmark. The Telegraphone was based on a theory of magnetic storage published by the French physicist Paul Janet in 1887, but it was Poulsen who first put this theory into practice. Poulsen filed his first patent for the wire recorder in 1898 and demonstrated his first devices at the 1900 Paris World's Fair. On 12 October 1901, the opening evening of an exhibition at the Gustav Pisko Art Salon in Vienna, he also recorded the voice of Emperor Franz Joseph; the recording survives and is considered the oldest magnetic sound recording. The reproduction quality of the Telegraphone was clearly inferior to that of Edison's Dictaphone. For this reason, it was not commercially successful and only a few devices were produced. It was not until the invention of the amplifier tube that this technology was used again. All of today's magnetic recording methods, including the hard disk and magnetic stripes on credit cards, trace their origins to Poulsen's invention.
