Askania "Bipack" Camera, c. 1931

Bamberg Works, Berlin-Friedenau. For 35mm film in four 120-meter metal cassettes, with quadruple-claw mechanism film transport with locking mechanism, sector-adjustable circulation, large 12-volt motor by Bamberg-Werke in Berlin, viewfinder via film as focusing screen, reverse with speedometer p/s and counters for film meters and individual images, telescope magnifier showing large image the right way up, Astro Berlin Pan Tachar 2.3/50 mm lens. Electrical functions not tested. - In addition: Askania compendium and large Askania wood tripod with rolling base or driver. - Note: Before the invention of subtractive multicolor negative films in around 1938, filtered color separations were recorded onto existing black-and-white film. Three film strips (technicolor) ran simultaneously through the camera for the three primary colors - red, green and blue. Chemists subsequently succeeded in adapting one of the films for two-color separations. In this "Bipack" color two film strips in the camera were sufficient. An orthochromatic green and blue sensitive front film and a panchromatic red sensitive rear film are exposed layer by layer. Askania presented their new camera at the Leipzig autumn fair (exhibition report "Die Kinotechnik" from 1931). Although this "Bipack" camera could also be used for the black-and-white traveling mask process (now called "stamping"), camera operators showed only moderate interest in the new idea. It was widely known that the Agfa in Wolfen and Eastman Kodak in Rochester were both working on new multi-color films that would enable any camera to become a single-strip "color camera." Compared to the Askania Z, which was sold in large numbers, only a few "Bipack" cameras were produced in the Bamberg factories. - Literature: "Photo Antiquaria" (Club Daguerre Germany) from 2013, no. 116, pp. 4-10. - The "Askania Bipack" camera is, therefore, a great rarity. This is the only example we know of to date to have been offered at auction.
