Zeppelin Study Expedition to Spitsbergen, July 2nd to August 24t

The official expedition photographer was Adolf Miethe, professor from 1899 to 1927 of the Institute for Applied Photochemistry and Film Technology at the Technical University of Berlin. Captured in approximately 200 mostly well-preserved photographs: 26 boxes measuring 22 x 24 cm, each containing four 8 x 11 cm photographs, and four boxes each containing two 8 x 11 cm photographs (several with captions), plus over 50 prints measuring approximately 17 x 24 cm and 30 smaller prints: crossing on the "Mainz" to Scandinavia, then on the steamboat Carmen via Hammerfest to the Arctic, visits to Lapps, people, sensitive animal and coastal shots, and documentation of the D.A.Z.E. balloon ascent. The German Arctic Zeppelin Expedition with the D.A.Z.E. balloon served as preparation for a research trip with the Zeppelin. Participants included Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the scientists Erich von Drygalski, Adolf Miethe, Max Reich, Bruno Seegert (later a professor at the Technical University of Berlin), and Otto von Zedlitz und Trützschler, as well as the landscape painter Otto Ferdinand Leiber and Prince Heinrich, the Emperor's brother, his talented hands ensured a happy outcome. While the escort ship, the Phoenix, was exploring the drifting ice, an engine failure occurred that could not be repaired with onboard equipment, and radio communication was also impossible. Prince Heinrich, free of any class prejudice, immediately converted the two-cylinder engine into a single-cylinder one within two hours. Now, with this emergency engine, a slow rescue to the distant mother ship was possible.
