A Painter and his Model – Painting, Early 18th Century

Unsigned, oil on canvas, relined and stretched on a new frame approx. 30–50 years ago, dimensions 59.5 x 46 cm. A view into a painter's studio during the Régence period. To the left of the window, a flowerpot with two red carnations, a token of affection, stands before two stretchers, next to which is a side table with painting tools. The painter kneels with palette, mahlstick, and brushes in front of a young woman, looking towards her navel. She is dressed in a pearl necklace, red stockings, and a cap, and is removing an undergarment. Behind the two young figures stands an easel with a painting of two goats, a symbol of fertility. A chest of drawers is suggested against the wall, upon which rests a candlestick. Above it hangs a painting, further above a bookshelf, and at the very top, a shelf with the usual plaster casts of head and foot studies for artists. – The painting is undamaged; cleaning or re-varnishing will restore the full vibrancy of color this painting deserves. Erotically charged with delicate poetry that requires no further detail. – Provenance: From the Ronny van der Velde Collection.
