Completely Preserved Mirror Sextant from the Brander Workshop in

Signed "Brander & H?schel in Augsburg"; original lacquered brass with removable wooden handle, handle length 4 1/3 in., half circle diameter (arc radius) 4 ? in.; degree scale division 7° – 0° – 120°; vernier scale inscription "Dina Min" (0° to 60°), silver-plated degree and vernier scales, brass body thickness 1/7 in.; with original key for adjusting the mirrors; optically good (part of one mirror is blind), mechanically very good (perfect function), very good condition for a device of this age (every part, every screw is original)! Very nice original wooden case, covered with dark brown leather and embossed gold print floral decoration, red velvet lined interior. Everything is also completely original! This is almost the same instrument as in: "G.F. Brander 1713–1783. Wissenschaftliche Instrumente aus seiner Werkstatt", Alto Brachner and others, Munich 1983, p. 129. – Georg Friedrich Brander (1713–1783) was an important German instrument maker in the second half of the 18th century. In 1737, he built the first German reflecting telescope in Augsburg. From around 1750 onwards, his workshop produced many scientific instruments (e.g. mathematical instruments, surveying instruments, meteorological instruments, microscopes, leveling instruments, octants, pumps, sextants, sundials, reflecting telescopes and many others). To date, approx. 300 instruments that can be clearly attributed to Brander's workshop have been preserved. The Deutsches Museum in Munich alone owns 143 of these instruments.
