Leica M3 with Viewfinder for Binocular Vision, c. 1962

Leitz, Wetzlar. Leica M3 no. 1058119. A camera that has seen extensive use. Unlike any other known Leitz viewfinder, this unique 1960s-era finder allows for binocular viewing: thanks to the brain's ability to process images via binocular correspondence, the user sees the real-world image with the left eye (kept open) while simultaneously viewing through the finder with the right eye; this reveals the outline of the frame—which automatically adjusts for close-range parallax—along with the rangefinder patch and the 135mm tele indicator. It was likely either a Leitz prototype or a custom modification made at the specific request of an employee, perhaps an unknown successor to Barnack working on an M-series camera in the 1960s. Such arrangements were common in the industry at the time: "If it’s a success, we’ll put it into mass production; if not, you can keep it." Indeed, for this particular M3, the precise viewfinder mask required had to be specially and expensively manufactured. No other surviving example is known to exist. The shutter speeds function correctly; however, there is a faint vertical dent situated above the "Leica" engraving. The rewind crank (beneath which lies another faint dent) and the hinged camera back both exhibit heavy signs of wear (specifically, a 1 cm section of the leatherette covering is missing beneath the film reminder dial), and the rangefinder displays a vertical alignment error. – Note: In the modern era, viewing a display with both eyes open has become an everyday occurrence; however, back in the early 1960s, photographers were still accustomed to—and often struggled to—keep their left eye tightly shut, a practice that effectively diminished a portion of their visual awareness (and potentially their spontaneity). This is a camera that was 60 years ahead of its time.
