Agfa Archive

Agfa, based in Berlin 1867, was split after 1945 into East (ORWO/Bitterfeld) and West (Agfa/Leverkusen for paper and Munich for camera) divisions. In the late 1950s, the company acquired various firms, including Leonar/Wandsbek, Mimosa/Kiel and Perutz/Munich; in 1964, it merged with Gevaert N.V./Mortsel while continuing to maintain their established product lines. After 1945, Agfa’s secret patents (including the Koslowski effect) were sold by the Allies to anybody, leading to a worldwide improvement in emulsion quality. Bruno Uhl, a former Agfa director, played a key role in establishing Photokina 1950. Details regarding Agfa’s business operations between 2004 and 2007 remain unclear depending on the source, particularly given reports that coating machines were prematurely dismantled in 2007. Advertising materials: 30 x 40 cm display stands for Isolette, Clack, and Silette; various Agfa rhombus-shaped displays from 1924 onwards; ashtray; an early 38 cm steel Agfa rhombus emblem; Agfacolor bookmarks; a Gevacolor illuminated display unit for sales counters; and the "Ich rufe die Jugend der Welt" (I Call Upon the Youth of the World) album commemorating the 1936 Berlin Olympics (pages 1 and 2 missing), its photographs are taken only by Agfa films and papers.
