Photographs from Japan, c. 1890–1920

1) 7 albumen prints (22 x 28 cm) mounted on card (31 x 39.5 cm): view of Nagasaki harbor from the hill, Kyoto from the hill, Ikegami pagodas, Shiba, Yokohama Bluff Garden, a small harbor with European-style houses and Japanese people in the foreground, and an unidentified small town. – 2) 2 double-sided accordion-style (leporello) albums with hand-colored albumen prints: covers made of lacquered wood panels (missing the heads of the rickshaw puller and the lady depicted) and 12 plates (14.5 x 19 cm) containing 24 images. Green leather album-style binding (likely not original to the contents), 25 plates (one loose; 15 x 19 cm) containing 50 images, some with captions exposed directly onto the print in English. – 3) Empty album (28 x 37 cm), cover featuring wood panels with inlay work (a few details missing), 12 elaborately painted plates for 48 images; includes clasp. – 4) Album depicting Japanese people in Germany (17 x 23 cm): mounted prints showing close bonds with hosts or work in a machine hall, as well as enjoyment of European costumes; includes loose photographs, one inscribed on the back "Esperanto Festival 1912". – 5) The Kanaya Hotel, Nikko (15 x 11 cm), 24 pages with 20 plates and a map. Accompanied by 24 photographs (11 x 15 cm) of celebrations and ceremonies, captioned on the back in Kanji and Sütterlin script; from the collection of a German world traveler (c. 1925–1938), plus 8 private snapshots from Japan and 20 from various locations worldwide. – And: 6) Souvenir of … Nagasaki, 8 hand-colored postcards, in mint condition.
