In 1875 the great American inventor, Thomas Alva Edison, designed a stencil copying system for manu-script documents. On August 8, 1876, he was granted U.S. patent no. 180857 for his new invention, the "Electric Pen", in which a tiny stylus (similar to a tattooist's needle) vibrating at 135 rps
perforated a special wax stencil which was then inked over to create manifold copies. The pen was powered by a wet-cell battery in a glass jar (although today it would be possible to operate it from a modern 4,5 V battery), and was effectively the 1st appliance to be equipped with an electric motor. Edison had anticipated that the growing numbers of lawyers, insurance brokers and merchants would be-come ready customers for his invention, however the
development of the typewriter soon afterwards reduced its demand considerably.
