With hand-colored engraving of an 18th century quartet playing cello, lute, violin and piano in salon setting, the pianist and fiddler with articulated heads and arms, the other two figures with articulated arms  (six movements) driven from two-air L'Epée cylinder movement, no. 710, with three hidden bells and bedplate stamped "J. Kettrer", in grained case with red interior, 9 in. (23 cm) overall, cylinder 3 ¾ in. (9.5 cm), picture 7 x 4 in. (18 x 10 cm), movement in excellent restored condition, two teeth and two tips near-invisibly replaced. – According to Bulleid's research in "Musical Box Tune Sheets", the L'Epée factory in Sainte-Suzanne, France, reset its serial numbers to "1" in 1880, making no. 710 an early production within the first year of the new numbering. The movement has several unusual features: two airs on one revolution of a fixed cylinder, three hidden bells, and a pulley-drive from an extended shaft in the gear-train. The size and form also make it unusual; most tableaux mécaniques were meant to be displayed on the wall, whereas this automaton was designed to sit comfortably upon a table.
