No. 24, with fusee movement numbered and stamped with triple-tulip mark on the top-plate, four pairs of cams operating in sequence 1-2-3-4 for just over twenty seconds, female winding key, large bird with dark-green iridescent plumage with bright-blue streaks and red highlights, articulated bone beak, head, wings, tail and chased gold twig-form perch, in tortoiseshell case with hinged key-compartment at rear, grille with scalloped edge and fine engraving of a stylised bird in its bower, gilt oval lid with polished interior, lock and chased design of ferns and flowers on stippled ground, wd. 3 5/8 x dp. 2 ¼ x approx. ht. 1 1/8 (9,4 x 5,7 x 2,7 cm), minor repairs on underside of hinge. With key. The movement is in excellent working condition. The bird sings a complex three-part song: trills, refrain, trills. Twenty-four is one of the lowest serial numbers yet documented on a singing bird box by Rochat. The large size of the bird and complexity of the mechanism testify to the maker's skill in accommodating both within a case of such slim proportions. A particularly fine exhibition piece.
