MITS Altair 8800, 1974
The Altair was the first personal computer in the world
to be offered in large quantities and is widely consid-
ered to be the "first" PC. The MITS Altair was built in
1974 by Ed Roberts and became instantly famous by
being featured on the cover of "Popular Electronics"
magazine in January 1975. Suddenly MITS was flooded
with inquiries and orders for its new affordable PC.
With the Altair, Ed Roberts introduced the S-100 bus,
predecessor to the ISA, PCI and all the current bus
systems used in PCs. By modern standards the computer
could not do much: it lacked a keyboard, monitor output
and an operating system. Data entry was done via DIP
switches in binary code since there was no monitor
output, but LEDs. Bill Gates and Paul Allen provided a
higher operating system in the form of Altair BASIC –
the foundation stone was laid for Microsoft and the
rest is computer history. The MITS Altair was also the
first PC to have been reproduced or copied. The first
clone – the IMSAI 8080 – was even more successful
than the original. The device is offered in good condi-
tion, although there is wear on the front panel. The
basic functionality is maintained: values can be stored
in the memory and recalled. Included is the original
MITS CPU board and a memory board with 16KB (ki-
lobytes) of memory. The machine runs on US 110 volts.
