拍品描述
"Ernest the Poet" Musical Automaton by Michel Ber-
trand, Switzerland, 1982
Based on a Vichy automaton c. 1890, depicting a dandy
artist seated, with sketchbook, pencil and satchel, on the
back of a chair, with plaster-composition head and
hands, blue glass eyes, articulated "dancing" eyelids
and lower lip, the massive going-barrel movement driv-
ing eight cams and two-air cylinder movement, dressed
in bohemian plaid silk breeches, wide-brimmed felt hat,
bowtie and blue velvet jacket with motifs of palette and
brushes painted on the lapels, height 35 in. (89 cm),
with brass key, "acorn" stop/start, maker's brass plaque
and paper label: "Michel Bertrand, Fabrication
d'Automates, Bullet, VD, Switzerland", chips on left
hand, otherwise excellent condition overall. – The eight
cams control a complex series of fifteen movements.
Ernest sits on the back of his chair, jauntily winking and
shrugging his shoulders alternately. He lowers his head,
rests his right leg on his left knee and moves his hand
with rapid sketching movement over the open page in
his notebook, his lower lip quivering with concentra-
tion. He turns his head, sweeps the pencil away, looks
up, uncrosses his leg and turns the notebook (with two
movements of the right arm) to display the sketch of a
monkey in top hat and monocle. Then, unsatisfied with
the result, he sets to work again. When he displays the
page a second time, the sketch comes alive as the mon-
key tips his hat and chatters garrulously. – An iconic
contemporary automaton by the late Michel Bertrand,
successor to Jouets et Automates Français (J.A.F.) and
eventual successor to Vichy-Triboulet. – Provenance:
Ex-collection of Jerry Steinbaum.
