Jester and Dancing Dwarf Musical Automaton by
Renou, c. 1900
Modeled as a young man seated on a Gothic-fretted
stool playing violin for a clown-dwarf who dances at his
feet, both figures with composition heads, jester with
merry expression, fixed brown glass eyes, two-tone wig,
bisque hands, articulated neck, right arm and elbow,
dressed in blue velvet doublet and hose, satin-lined cape
and matching hat trimmed with metal-thread, dwarf in
lace-edged dark-gold and red satin suit. On velvet-
covered base containing single-air going-barrel move-
ment with Renou key and stop/start, height 19 in. (48,5
cm), dwarf appropriately replaced. Working order. –
The jester sways his head and bows the violin while his
companion, balancing a feather on his nose, leaps
wildly up and down. – An amusing and unusual Me-
dieval-inspired automaton with a playful sense of hu-
mor characteristic of Louis Renou.
