"Marquise" Musical Automaton by Leopold Lambert, c. 1886

With unmarked Jumeau bisque head, closed mouth, fixed cornflower-blue threaded glass eyes, pierced ears with earrings, original dressed mohair wig in elaborate chignon (not removed for inspection), slender papier-mâché body with bisque shoulder plate and hands holding bone-handled mirror and a swansdown powder puff, on circular velvet-covered base containing three-cam going-barrel motor and cylinder movement playing two airs on one revolution as the lady turns and gently inclines her head, applies powder and raises her mirror to admire the result, dressed in original satin costume with lace-trimmed floral silk bodice and trained overskirt, ht. 18 in. (46 cm), left arm inactive, otherwise good unrestored working and playing condition. With factory brass key and tune-sheet marked "Jouet d'Enfant, H.M." - A well-preserved automaton from the first years of the firm's production, with refined couturier costume from the atelier of Eugénie Bourgeois Lambert.
