With papier-mâché head, original paint, fixed green paperweight eyes with dramatic grey outline, and curly grey mohair beard, sitting cross-legged on velvet-covered base, a teacup in his left hand, in his right a metal mouthpiece connected by silk rope to the hookah at his feet, with five-cam open-spring motor playing two airs ("Valencia" and "My Blue Heaven"), bellows and steel LB key, in original cream satin harem paints, paisley silk cummerbund, matching turban, red velvet cloak and metallic-trimmed slippers, height 23 in. (58,5 cm). – The smoker looks from left to right, inclines his head to inhale from the mouthpiece which he lifts in his right hand, looks in the opposite direction to exhale, raises the cup in his left hand, then lowers his head to take a sip. The smoke is pulled by bellows from the hookah, through the base and body and exhaled through the mouth. – The Narghile Smoker, one of Leopold Lambert's most popular automata, exists in several forms. It appears in an early catalogue as "Turque Fumeur" and was later produced as a black figure and as the fair-skinned version seen here. – The exotic Arabian-style dress was perhaps a result of the popularity surrounding 1921's hit silent film, "The Sheik", starring Rudolph Valentino, who was commemorated in a special portrait by one of Lambert's contemporaries, the Italian doll-maker Lenci. – Lambert's attempt to promote his automata to a modern urban audience is reflected in his choice of music: "My Blue Heaven" composed by Walter Donaldson in 1924 and José Padilla's song "Valencia" made famous by the 1926 film of the same name. – An unusual and attractive smoking automaton in good working order.– Literature:Andre Soriano, "Mechanische Spielfiguren aus den Vergangenen Zeiten", 1985, pp. 96–99.
